Chiefs WR Jon Baldwin visits S.P.E.A.K program
KC Chiefs WR Jon Baldwin visited the S.P.E.A.K program in Pittsburgh last summer and it sparked his interest in working with autistic children. The S.P.E.A.K. Summer Program (Summer Program Educating Autistic Kids), sponsored by the Autism Society of Pittsburgh, provides a safe and healthy environment for autistic children between the ages of 5 and 21. The program provides autistic youth with social interaction, recreation and community skills that help children manage their disability. Students participate in art and music therapy, speech and language therapy, and recreational activities that include swimming, hiking, basketball, and bowling. Students also learn valuable life skills applicable to their ages. They participate in Community Based Instruction that focuses on teaching these life skills in the natural environment, the community. Such skills include how to purchase an item in a store, dine out at restaurants, and take public transportation in the Pittsburgh area. Students are placed in classrooms with no more than eight other students. Each class is managed by two certified teachers or instructional assistants.
